Fun night @ KKPG!

It’s another beautiful Sunday morning here in Hawai’i nei, and I hope all of you are having a great weekend!  Yesterday was a great day – I actually shot a decent round of golf in the morning (well, at least I didn’t suck like I did on Thursday!), our beloved U.H. Warriors killed Fresno State 49-27, and we had another awesome night at the Kani Ka Pila Grille!  So many of our friends & family came down to welcome us back, including the ‘ole gang from San Francisco – Paul, Diane, Donna, Susan … by the way, Susan was the first person to sign up as a ManoaDNA FaceBook fan!  Numero Uno!  There were also many friends and visitors from Japan there including Kiyoko, Hiromi, Emiko, Noriko, Sae, Shion, Miyuki & her friends, Sachi, Ayako, Ai, and Masako … MAHALO! everyone for coming down to welcome us back “home”!

There were two “highlights” during last night’s KKPG performance – first, we had a LOT of hula since it just so happened that there were a lot of hula dancers, including a Japan kumu and her halau, in the audience.  But what was really unusual last night was that we played requests for songs which – one, we’ve never done – and two, were songs which I used to perform way back in my college days as a musician for Hawaiian Air! (And I mean WAAAAAYYY back! hahaha!)  They were  Elvis Presley’s “Blue Hawai’i”, Kui Lee’s “I’ll Remember You”, and Matthew Kane’s “Ka Makani Ka’ili Aloha“.  I think these songs were popular back in the ’50s and early ’60s .. way before Nick & Alex were born … and they are still very popular today.  Anyway, we managed to pull it off with Nick and his iPhone (he got me the lyrics online – gotta love that technology!:-)), and the audience was happy with the results (I think!)

Did you know that today is October, 10, 2010 … 10/10/10?  It’s supposed to be a very lucky day to get married, so naturally, we’re performing for a wedding this evening!  It certainly is a very busy but fun weekend!

Aloha, “D”
