Ok, the puppies ready – they’re so cute and get so excited whenever it’s time for their walk! I got a call last night from our good friends Danny & Ann Akaka on the Big Island. Last night was their Twilight at Kalahuipua’a, a monthly event which is held on the Saturday closest to the full moon. It’s held at the Eva Parker Wood cottage amongst the ancient fishponds located on the grounds of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, and features the best of local Hawaiian culture in song, dance, and storytelling. MDNA has performed there every February for the last 3 years and it is absolutely THE best gig ever! Last night, Nick & Alex dropped in to check it out since they were on the Big Island for a golfing trip, and Danny graciously acknowledged their presence and asked them to kani ka pila a bit … so they ended up doing DOWN IN PARADISE and VOICES SWEET. It must have been a chicken-skin moment because both Danny and Anna said that the audience cried during VOICES SWEET! If you’re not familiar with the song, it was written about an emotional journey with my mom to find our ancestral roots in Hiroshima, Japan. It was used as the theme song for the documentary which was aired this past April …
I still have a bit of a cough, so I decided not to play squash this morning. By the way, if you’re having trouble singing because of a sore throat, our good friends Leland & Kuniko have an interesting remedy – a shot of tequila or Rock ‘n Rye! I was having a little difficulty singing the other night at Lulu’s, so they gave me a shot of Patron tequila and it actually helped! Felt pretty good too …
We’re off to pick up my mom for brunch … yum! Catch you guys later!
Aloha,
